The High Court has granted the reopening of an inquest into the death of a 14-year-old boy, following his mother’s belief that he may have died as a result of an online challenge that went awry. Ellen Roome, the mother of Jools Sweeney, was emotional as the judges approved her request for a new inquest. She had raised concerns that crucial social media evidence had not been acquired or analyzed in the initial investigation.

Jools, hailing from Gloucestershire, was discovered unconscious in his bedroom in April 2022. The previous inquest, which lasted only 23 minutes and did not include live testimony, returned a narrative verdict. His family suspects that social media, particularly his potential involvement in the “blackout challenge,” a dangerous online trend where participants asphyxiate themselves, may have played a part in his tragic demise.

Expressing her relief, Ms. Roome emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth behind her son’s passing and preventing similar tragedies for other families. New evidence concerning social media’s role in Jools’ death was presented during a recent hearing, shedding light on unexplored leads related to TikTok’s platform and data handling.

Both the coroner and TikTok supported the decision to reopen the inquest. Subsequently, two senior judges nullified the previous conclusion and mandated a fresh inquiry to be conducted at a later date. Ms. Roome, who has been advocating for legal changes to safeguard children’s digital data posthumously, also disclosed her involvement in a lawsuit against TikTok alongside other bereaved parents.

Furthermore, the media regulator, Ofcom, announced an investigation into TikTok’s handling of harmful content exposure to children, citing specific concerns about age verification protocols. This landmark ruling in England and Wales marks a significant milestone, highlighting the pivotal role of social media evidence in scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding Jools’ untimely death.
