Iran has announced that it is in the final stages of negotiating an agreement with Oman regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping. This development follows remarks by US President Donald Trump hinting at a potential deal announcement soon.

The strategic waterway has been a source of conflict between the US and Iran, with joint US-Israeli strikes on key Iranian locations triggering retaliatory actions by Iran, including the closure of the strait.

The agreement’s success is expected to hinge on the US lifting its blockade on Iranian ports. The Trump administration has been firm in its stance against any deal that strengthens Iran’s control over the strait, viewing it as a significant setback for the US and a departure from international norms.

Iran has asserted its need for a degree of authority over the strait, emphasizing that it will not revert to being an entirely open international passage as it was before the conflict.

Recent reports highlighting tensions between President Trump and his defense officials regarding munition levels have raised concerns about the US’s ability to sustain the conflict. Allegedly, Trump confronted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over severe munition shortages, indicating a strain in their relationship.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has refuted these claims, dismissing them as “fake news” and denying any such exchange between Trump and Hegseth during the Camp David summit. Leavitt defended Hegseth and reiterated Trump’s support for his efforts, labeling the reports as baseless attempts to undermine the Defense Secretary’s credibility.
