A Food Basics store will soon replace a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys area this autumn, leading to job losses for numerous employees. Metro Inc. indicated that the closure of the store on Wednesday is part of a strategic move to cater better to the demands of customers in the locale.

The decision took the employees at Metro’s Southgate branch by surprise, as they were informed about the upcoming closure in May due to financial pressures. The company emphasized that the transformation was based on local market dynamics and customer preferences rather than rental costs.

The Southgate Metro store, which had 72 employees, highlighted that under the terms of their collective agreement, the workers are not eligible for transfers to other Metro outlets. However, those interested in working at the new Food Basics store are encouraged to apply for available positions.

The new Food Basics store’s collective agreement mandates the hiring of at least 10 part-time and five full-time employees from the former Southgate Metro location who apply for roles at the new establishment. Despite this opportunity, employees like Justin Braganza expressed concerns, especially since his role as a meat cutter may not be applicable at Food Basics.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated improved options for the affected workers, including job prospects at the new store and enhanced severance benefits. Legal experts have raised questions about the closure and rebranding process, suggesting possible avenues for the union to challenge the company’s actions.

While uncertainties loom over the future of the employees, the negotiation process between the union and the employer remains confidential, signaling a potential agreement between the parties. Braganza and his colleagues feel the impact of the store’s closure not just professionally but also on the personal relationships they will leave behind.
