Keir Starmer has pledged to champion a more cohesive nation following an antisemitic terrorist incident in north London last week.
The Prime Minister cautioned that Britain faces a decision on whether to descend into “the politics of resentment and discord” amidst global turmoil and unrest. He called on the British public to rally behind him in a “national endeavor” commensurate with the magnitude of the challenges and upheavals confronting the country.
In response to the terror attack in Golders Green, which left two Jewish men stabbed on the street, the UK’s national threat level was escalated from substantial to severe last week. Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the assault on Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76.
In an article for the Observer, Keir Starmer expressed, “The entire nation has been shaken by the appalling attack in Golders Green. We are witnessing a resurgence of terrorism fueled by Islamist extremism. We are observing hooligans funded by foreign entities to perpetrate criminal acts, all in an environment where antisemitism and unabashed hatred have spilled over into mainstream society.
“Beyond our borders, we see a fractured world – a convergence of crises heading our way. With conflicts on multiple fronts and global economic challenges impacting our daily lives, the world is more perilous than ever before. We are at a crossroads.
“We can succumb to the politics of animosity and division, or we can rise together in a national initiative that matches the scale of the threats and turbulence we confront. I speak of a national mission to forge a stronger, more resilient, and more united nation, empowering us to seize control of our destiny, set higher aspirations, and strive for a brighter future.”
The government recently announced a £25 million allocation to bolster security by enhancing police patrols and fortifying safeguards around synagogues, schools, and community centers. Legislative measures are set to be expedited in the coming weeks to crackdown on individuals and groups engaged in hostile activities on behalf of foreign states, including those acting as proxies.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will receive enhanced powers akin to proscription to prohibit the operations of state-sponsored entities posing a threat to national security. This move aims to equip law enforcement and intelligence agencies with more robust tools under the National Security Act to disrupt the activities of individuals acting on behalf of state-backed organizations.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized that the country has been “horrified” by the Golders Green attack and vowed to combat the “pervasive malevolence” of antisemitism.
He stated, “Antisemitism is a deeply ingrained and pervasive malevolence that has plagued our society for far too long. The time has come for a genuine national push, driven by concrete actions and involving every segment of our society.
“Together, we must stand in solidarity with our Jewish community, support them, and denounce hatred wherever it manifests. Because this land belongs to them, and the safety of British Jews is the benchmark against which we must now gauge ourselves as a nation.”
