“Keir Starmer Denounces Trump’s Greenland Tariff Threats”

Published on

Keir Starmer has responded to Donald Trump’s recent controversial announcement regarding imposing tariffs on countries, including the UK, if they continue to oppose his ambitions to acquire Greenland.

Trump stated that these countries would face a 10% tariff on all imports to the US, escalating to 25% if his Greenland acquisition plans are not fulfilled by June.

In reaction, Prime Minister Starmer emphasized that Greenland is under Danish sovereignty and its future is determined by the Greenlanders and the Danes. He highlighted the importance of Arctic security for NATO and denounced the idea of imposing tariffs on allies working together for collective security.

Trump defended his stance by alleging that countries like China and Russia are interested in Greenland and suggested that only the US, under his leadership, can safeguard the region due to national security concerns.

The UK recently deployed a military officer to Greenland amid heightened military activities in the Arctic region.

Trump further warned that starting in 2026, countries involved in the Greenland issue would face tariffs, emphasizing the strategic importance of Greenland for US security.

French President Macron reaffirmed support for Ukraine and the coalition formed for peace efforts, while expressing solidarity with Denmark’s military actions in Greenland to safeguard Arctic security.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey criticized Trump’s tariff threats, calling for a unified response from European and Commonwealth allies against such provocative actions.

Kemi Badenoch condemned the tariffs as detrimental to both the UK and the US, stressing that Greenland’s sovereignty should be determined by its inhabitants.

Nigel Farage expressed disagreement with the US government’s tariff plans and raised concerns about the impact on trade.

Farage also suggested reevaluating the strategic significance of Diego Garcia if Greenland faces security risks.

The international community, including UK politicians, continues to voice opposition to Trump’s tariff threats and assert the importance of respecting Greenland’s sovereignty.
