Donald Trump has announced plans to impose significant tariffs on the UK starting next month if the country continues to oppose his intentions regarding Greenland. The US President argues that owning Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, is crucial for national security and could be part of a missile defense system known as the “golden dome.”

Trump took to Truth Social to declare that starting February 1st, he will impose 10% tariffs on several countries, including the UK, for their involvement in Greenland. If by June 1st, the international community does not support his bid to take control of Greenland, the tariff will escalate to 25% until the US achieves the “complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

In response, Keir Starmer emphasized the UK’s stance that Greenland belongs to Denmark and that decisions about its future lie with the Greenlanders and Danes. He denounced the application of tariffs on allies striving for collective NATO security and pledged to address the matter directly with the US administration. European leaders have also stood with Denmark against US claims on Greenland, warning of potential repercussions on NATO unity.

Trump’s threats have raised concerns about the destabilization of NATO, as any forcible acquisition of Greenland, a Danish territory within NATO, would trigger intervention by alliance members. The mere prospect of tariffs has the potential to disrupt the global economy.

In his social media posts, Trump accused European nations of jeopardizing global peace and security by their actions in Greenland. He emphasized the importance of Greenland in the US security strategy and called for negotiations with Denmark and other implicated countries.

French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed support for the sovereignty of nations and joined Denmark’s initiative in Greenland to bolster security in the Arctic region. He condemned intimidation tactics and tariff threats, urging a united European response if such measures materialize.

UK politicians, including Lib Dem leader Ed Davey and MPs Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage, criticized Trump’s tariff threats on the UK over Greenland. They emphasized the need for respecting Greenland’s sovereignty and condemned the imposition of tariffs on allies for pursuing legitimate security interests. Farage proposed reevaluating security concerns by looking at Diego Garcia as an alternative.
