“King Surprises Student with Black Belt at Jiu Jitsu School”

Published on

The King pleasantly surprised a standout student with a Jiu Jitsu black belt while visiting a renowned martial arts school today. Charles actively engaged in the ceremony at the Roger Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in Hammersmith, a leading institution in the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Observing demonstrations from students of various skill levels, the King fondly recalled his days in the Royal Navy, humorously likening their grappling techniques to his experiences in tug-o-war aboard HMS Bronington.

Having served on the mine hunter from 1971 to 1976, Charles shared anecdotes with the students, highlighting the similarities between their activities and his naval past. He commended the students from REORG, an organization dedicated to promoting BJJ among military personnel, veterans, and other individuals facing physical, mental, and social challenges.

Before the honorific ceremony, Sam Sheriff praised Trent Scanlen for his commitment, leading to his promotion from a brown belt to a black belt. Trent’s journey began in 2015 when he opened a gym in Richmond and connected with Sam, subsequently becoming a Trustee of REORG in 2020, offering support to the military and veteran community.

Following the belt presentation, the King received his own white belt, symbolizing the entry-level rank in the sport. Playfully waving the belt amidst applause from students, Charles embraced the moment. The Roger Gracie Academy, established in 2004 by Roger Gracie and Master Mauricio Gomes, upholds a blend of traditional Gracie family jiu-jitsu principles with modern training methodologies.

Mauricio Gomes, hailed as the “Godfather of British Jiu-Jitsu,” holds an eighth-degree black belt and has significantly contributed to the global spread of BJJ. Former Royal Marine commando Mark Ormrod MBE expressed how the sport had rejuvenated him and fellow veterans, providing a sense of purpose post-service.

Paul Olima and pop star Tinie Tempah engaged with Charles on utilizing BJJ to support young people, emphasizing the positive impact of the sport on individuals from diverse backgrounds. Reflecting on the visit, Roger Gracie expressed pride in hosting the King, underscoring the inclusive nature of jiu-jitsu that welcomes everyone, regardless of their background.

The King’s interaction with various individuals highlighted the potential of BJJ in fostering personal growth and community support, echoing a sentiment of inclusivity and empowerment within the martial arts discipline.
