Bev Craig, the Labour candidate running for Greater Manchester Mayor to succeed Andy Burnham, has raised concerns about the potential threat posed by the Reform party in Manchester. Despite Nigel Farage’s party focusing on the Clacton by-election, Craig emphasized the need to take Reform’s presence seriously following their strong performance in the recent local elections.

In an interview with The Mirror during her campaign visit in Urmston, Craig acknowledged the two million eligible voters for the Greater Manchester mayoral by-election on July 30 and expressed hope that voters would reject divisive politics. She highlighted the efforts of Reform activists, purportedly urged to assist in Clacton, hundreds of miles away, through a WhatsApp message.

While addressing the situation, Craig labeled the actions in Clacton as detrimental to democracy, emphasizing the importance of accountability in political decisions. She stressed the significance of recognizing the reasons behind the Reform party’s appeal and addressing the longstanding issues that have left many feeling neglected.

The mayoral race in the North-West was triggered by Burnham’s return to Westminster after his Makerfield by-election victory. Despite his previous successes in Greater Manchester mayoral elections, Reform made significant gains in the recent local elections, positioning them as a formidable opponent. A survey indicated Labour holding 33.2% of first preference support, closely followed by Farage’s party at 30.1% and the Greens at 12.5%.

Craig highlighted the need for Labour to not take voters for granted and to address underlying issues that have led to a rise in support for Reform. She outlined her commitment to a cost-of-living guarantee and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of residents, such as providing free buses for young people. Craig expressed optimism that voters would reject divisive politics and emphasized the importance of connecting with the community.

Having originated from a council estate near Belfast, Craig moved to Manchester in 2003 and felt immediately welcomed by the city’s inclusive atmosphere. As a former Burnage councillor and the current leader of Manchester City Council, she emphasized the need for authenticity in politics, praising Burnham’s commitment to remaining true to his beliefs.

Finally, Craig emphasized the importance of accountability and standing up for Greater Manchester’s interests, showcasing her determination to serve the region independently while fostering a cooperative relationship with Burnham. She underlined her dedication to the community and her intention to prioritize the needs of Greater Manchester above all else.
