Stress combined with late-night eating might contribute to digestive issues, as per a recent study. Experts suggest that consuming food late at night could have a negative impact on gut health, especially for individuals experiencing high levels of stress.
In a research study, US scientists analyzed information from over 11,000 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study revealed that individuals with elevated allostatic load scores, indicating the effects of chronic stress on the body, who consumed a significant portion of their daily calories after 9pm, were 1.7 times more likely to experience constipation and diarrhea.
Another analysis, involving data from more than 4,000 individuals in the American Gut Project, showed that those with high stress levels who indulged in late-night snacks were 2.5 times more prone to bowel problems. Lead researcher Dr. Harika Dadigiri from New York Medical College at Saint Mary’s and Saint Clare’s Hospital emphasized the importance of not just what but also when individuals eat, particularly when they are already under stress.
The study recommends adhering to a structured meal schedule to promote regular eating habits. Dr. Dadigiri highlighted the significance of establishing consistent routines like structured meal times to encourage healthier eating patterns and improve digestive health over time.
These findings will be presented at Digestive Disease Week, scheduled to take place in Chicago from May 2 to May 5.
