Counter-terror police in London are spearheading an inquiry into an arson incident. The Metropolitan Police received a call around 10:30 pm last Friday regarding an incident in Hendon. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man approaching a row of shops with a plastic bag containing three bottles of fluid. He placed the bag next to the building and attempted to ignite it, but the bottles did not fully catch fire. While there was minor damage to the shopfront, no injuries were reported, and the man fled the scene.
Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation, with support from officers in the North West Command Area. Despite this, the Metropolitan Police clarified that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, with no arrests made thus far.
Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London stated that while the recent arson is not directly linked to previous incidents in North West London, similarities have prompted Counter Terrorism officers to lead the case. Flanagan urged anyone with information or footage related to the incident to contact the police promptly, emphasizing the commitment to pursuing those responsible for such acts.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, overseeing policing in the area, acknowledged community concerns following the previous arson in Golders Green. He assured that local officers are collaborating closely with Counter Terrorism Policing to support the investigation, leading to increased police presence in the vicinity. Security measures, including armed police patrols and deployments of specialized officers, have been heightened to reassure communities and thwart potential offenders.
