“Manchester Tram Services Halted by Britain First March”

Published on

Tram services in Manchester city center came to a standstill this afternoon due to a Britain First march taking place. Supporters of the far-right group gathered at Store Street near Manchester’s Piccadilly station around noon, starting their march towards St Peter’s Square just before 1.10pm.

In response, a counter-protest named Resist Britain First, organized by anti-racism groups, also assembled at Piccadilly Gardens. Visitors were advised to expect significant disruptions on roads and Metrolink services. The Bee Network announced the closure of stops at Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street, and St Peter’s Square due to the planned protest.

The Metrolink services were suspended as counter-protesters obstructed the tram tracks in the city center but were later dispersed by the police. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) stated that officers are working to minimize disruptions and maintain safety around Piccadilly Gardens.

To manage the situation, police were granted additional powers. A Section 34 dispersal order was enforced for the city center, along with a Section 60 order granting officers enhanced stop and search authority as well as the ability to remove face coverings.

GMP reported that the majority of protesters from both sides were peaceful, with officers ensuring a safe protest environment. A large police presence was deployed for security, following previous incidents of violence at a Britain First march in February. Eleven arrests were made during clashes with counter-protesters at that time, prompting increased vigilance during the current demonstration.

The police are closely monitoring the situation as the march progresses towards St. Peter’s Square. Efforts are being made to handle any potential disturbances effectively and maintain public safety during the protests.
