Love Prevails: Widow Honors Late Wife’s Memory

Jon Kortmansky was traveling for work when his wife Lori stumbled upon their future dream home. Enchanted by the one-bedroom apartment’s dark wooden floors, Lori immediately felt it was the perfect fit in 2005, even before Jon had seen it.

Recalling the moment, Jon shared that Lori, an interior designer, poured her heart into making their home truly unique. A decade later, they expanded by purchasing the adjacent apartment, tearing down the dividing wall, and creating a spacious three-bedroom, three-bathroom dwelling with a 240-square-foot balcony.

Their life together flourished. Jon, a law firm partner, and Lori were fortunate to travel extensively, enjoying frequent ski trips during winter. Amid their busy schedules, Jon’s college sweetheart Lori had kept a poignant secret from everyone except him – she had been battling brain cancer since her 20s.

Their love story began in college, blossoming from friendship to romance. Despite facing health challenges, Lori’s infectious smile and positive outlook never wavered. Two years into their marriage at 25, Lori received a devastating diagnosis of an aggressive brain tumor.

In 1998, following her diagnosis, they faced a crucial decision on starting a family before an experimental treatment that would affect her fertility. Despite numerous recurrences, surgeries, and treatments, Lori’s resilience and positivity shone through, concealing her illness from many.

Lori’s zest for life led her to establish her own business, learn French, and explore the world, even as her health declined. Her determination was evident in her adventurous spirit, skiing, golfing, and embracing new challenges.

Jon’s devotion to caring for Lori during her illness was unwavering. Balancing work and caregiving, he faced immense financial and emotional strain. Lori’s condition deteriorated over time, leaving her incapacitated and reliant on Jon’s constant care.

Lori passed away in Jon’s arms in April 2021, leaving a profound void in his life. Grieving the loss, Jon struggled to cope with the memories of Lori’s final days in their home. The apartment, once a sanctuary, became a painful reminder of their journey together.

Guided by his sister’s advice, Jon embarked on a new chapter, seeking a fresh start. After viewing numerous apartments, he found solace in a new home where he could begin anew. With his migraines subsiding and Lori’s memories safely kept, Jon embraced a future filled with hope and new beginnings.

Reflecting on his journey, Jon expressed gratitude for the support of friends and the opportunity to rediscover joy and purpose in life. With a renewed sense of optimism, he honors Lori’s memory by living fully and embracing the future.
