Police in Northern Ireland have apprehended a 27-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident where an officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle. The event occurred in the Model Farm estate in Downpatrick around 4:45 am on Sunday. The injured officer, as confirmed by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The situation unfolded when officers tried to intercept a vehicle in the Fountain Street area. Subsequently, the vehicle was discovered in Ballymote Walk, where law enforcement observed a man fleeing from it. A pursuit ensued towards Colmcille Road, according to reports from Belfast Live.
Upon returning to their vehicle, officers encountered an individual in the driver’s seat who began driving recklessly. Allegedly, the vehicle was driven directly at an officer, prompting the officer to discharge a shot before being hit.
After abandoning the police vehicle, the suspect fled the scene, but was later captured and detained on suspicion of attempted murder. Immediate medical attention was administered on-site by police colleagues, with the injured officer later transported to the hospital for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Subsequent to the incident, the police vehicle, officer’s weapon, and ammunition were recovered for forensic analysis. Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones stated that the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland was notified, as per standard procedure when a police firearm is used. Investigations by the Police Ombudsman are ongoing.
Jones expressed support for the injured officer and emphasized the risks officers face in carrying out their duties. She highlighted the potential for life-altering or fatal injuries in such situations and commended the actions taken to protect lives.
Authorities have initiated an attempted murder inquiry led by detectives from the Serious Crime branch, with investigations progressing swiftly. Individuals with information or relevant footage are urged to contact the police, referencing reference number 317 31/05/26, or report online on the PSNI website. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously with Crimestoppers.
