Man released on bail after boy found in croc pen

A man taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident where a young boy was found in a crocodile enclosure at a zoo has been released on bail due to being deemed unfit for questioning.

The 30-year-old individual from Norfolk was apprehended after the zoo proprietor intervened to save the severely injured three-year-old child from the reptile pen, where the boy had reportedly been thrown.

Cambridgeshire Police disclosed that the man, unrelated to the toddler, was deemed unfit for interrogation and is now on bail until September 18. The child, hailing from Cambridgeshire, is currently hospitalized at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in critical but stable condition. The authorities were alerted to the incident at Johnson’s of Old Hurst, near Huntingdon, at 1:24 pm on Thursday.

An unnamed local resident mentioned that Tracey Johnson, co-owner of the zoo with her husband Andy, leaped into the enclosure in a rescue attempt. The police verified that the child was attacked by a crocodile. The villager shared, “Reportedly, the zoo owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, jumped into the enclosure to save the child.”

Chris Newman, director of the national reptile welfare center, who has dealt with crocodiles at Old Hurst, praised Tracey’s heroic actions, emphasizing her courage and strength.

The Johnson family, including Tracey and Andy, were observed conversing with zoo staff on Friday. Their sons were also seen working at the establishment. Mrs. Johnson, seen holding red roses earlier, declined to provide any comments.

The boy, sustaining serious injuries, was swiftly transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he remains in critical condition. The authorities have detained a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detective Inspector Verity McCann stated that the investigation involves speaking with witnesses present at the zoo during the incident. The police believe the man in custody and the child have no prior connection. They are providing support to the boy’s family and expressing sympathy for them.

The zoo management announced the closure of the Tropical House as a gesture of respect to the affected family. They extended their thoughts and prayers to the boy and his family.

Emergency services dispatched multiple units to the site, including an ambulance, rapid response vehicle, ambulance officer vehicle, and air ambulance. Police presence was evident at the location to secure the area.

Situated on a tranquil country lane in Old Hurst village, the zoo features various amenities such as a tea room, farm shop, and steakhouse. It houses over 100 animals, including lions, tigers, sloth bears, capybaras, and meerkats.

The Johnsons have been involved with crocodiles for over two decades. Andy Johnson, the current owner, has contributed to a published dossier on crocodilian farming and husbandry.

Mr. Newman praised the zoo’s management and emphasized that the incident was an unpredictable act by an individual, asserting the overall high standards of the facility.

Local residents described feeling safe during previous visits to the zoo, noting the elevated platforms and fencing around the crocodile enclosure.

Officials and community members expressed shock and sympathy for the family of the child involved in the incident. The incident is under investigation, and authorities urge against speculating online.

The community and authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing support to the affected family during this challenging time.
