“Middle East Crisis and El Nino to Keep Bread and Pasta Prices High”

Published on

Household staples such as bread and pasta are predicted to remain pricier in the long run due to the Middle East crisis and the El Nino weather phenomenon, according to a recent report. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) analysis suggests that after significant shocks, food prices tend to decrease slowly and only partially, resulting in continued high grocery costs for consumers even after the initial crisis subsides.

Research by the ECIU reveals that, on average, prices drop by just 1% of the original increase after six months, 5% after a year, and 7% after two years. Despite this, only about 35% of the affordability impact is alleviated in wage-adjusted terms within two years.

The report, drawing on over 30 years of UK data, highlights the phenomenon known as the “rocket and feathers” effect, where food prices spike rapidly but decline gradually, contributing to sustained price levels post-crisis. Chris Jaccarini, an analyst at ECIU, noted that factors like warfare and extreme weather are driving up the costs of essential items due to the increased prices of oil, gas, and fertilizers used in food production processes.

The report emphasizes the pressing need to transition away from fossil fuels to mitigate the impact of volatile global markets on food prices. Henry Dimbleby, former lead of the government’s National Food Strategy, warns that without addressing the root causes such as energy and transport costs, food inflation will persist, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations.

Furthermore, the ECIU projects a 50% increase in UK food prices by November compared to pre-crisis levels, with warmer El Nino temperatures posing a significant threat to the prices of cocoa, food oils, rice, and sugar. This trend has already led to a more than 40% increase in food prices since mid-2021, particularly impacting low-income families.

To address the ongoing food affordability crisis, experts advocate for long-term solutions that enhance food system resilience and reduce reliance on unsustainable practices. Establishing a comprehensive strategy through legislation, such as a Good Food Bill, is crucial to building a sustainable and accessible food system amidst escalating climate challenges and geopolitical disruptions.
