A set of twins, dubbed “Miracle” babies, were born prematurely at 23 weeks and two days, spending an extensive eight months in the hospital due to their delicate health conditions. The mother, Amy Sharkey, 32, welcomed her daughter Orla at just 1lb 1oz, followed by her son Frankie four days later at 1lb and 5oz. The couple, along with partner Jack Ginn, 33, were informed that the survival odds for the twins were typically less than 10 percent.

Frankie’s hospital stay lasted 161 days before he was released in February 2026. Orla, on the other hand, endured an additional 61 days before the entire family could return home in April of the same year. Despite facing numerous health challenges, the twins are currently progressing well, as stated by the couple.

Recalling the early days, Jack described Orla’s minuscule size, resembling a mango with tiny arms and legs, and hands no larger than his fingernail. Frankie was also notably small, barely larger than his hand. The parents highlighted Orla’s spirited and bold nature, while Frankie was portrayed as affectionate and talkative even before their anticipated due date, showcasing distinct personalities.

Amy’s pregnancy was uneventful until her 20-week scan, with no apparent concerns. However, she unexpectedly began experiencing dilation at 20 weeks, leading to her hospital admission. A cervical stitch was promptly inserted on August 20, a move that the couple believes prolonged the pregnancy and safeguarded the twins’ survival.

Following complications, Orla’s premature birth at 23 weeks and two days marked a critical juncture. Subsequently, Frankie was born four days later, necessitating immediate medical attention in the neonatal unit. Orla faced significant health challenges, including a bowel infection and multiple surgeries, while Frankie battled chronic lung disease and heart issues.

After enduring a lengthy hospital stay, both twins were finally discharged – Frankie in February and Orla in April. Their journey was fraught with uncertainties and medical interventions, with ongoing care requirements such as tube feeding and oxygen support for Frankie. Amy expressed concerns about Orla’s long-term health, but remains hopeful for Frankie’s eventual independence from the oxygen tube.

The couple expressed immense gratitude to the dedicated healthcare professionals at the Simpsons Special Care Babies Unit and the Ronald MacDonald charity, acknowledging their instrumental role in the twins’ survival.
