Two individuals narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation when heavy concrete slabs fell from a truck onto a busy motorway. The shocking incident, caught on camera, showed the massive slabs dislodging from the vehicle and crashing onto the road, damaging multiple cars and almost hitting nearby pedestrians.
The terrifying event unfolded on the North-South Motorway in southern Australia around 10:30 am on a Friday as the truck was changing lanes. Police reported that the truck’s cargo shifted, causing two 15-tonne concrete segments to plummet onto the highway.
The falling slabs struck three vehicles parked on the motorway’s shoulder, where two pedestrians were standing. A cloud of dust enveloped the area as the heavy concrete blocks hit the ground.
Emergency services rushed one pedestrian to the hospital due to a suspected broken arm. Despite the chaos, only minor injuries were sustained by two other individuals. Authorities expressed astonishment that no fatalities occurred during the incident.
Vicas Mataru, a father of two, was assisting a colleague with a broken-down vehicle when the concrete slabs came crashing down. Mataru, who suffered a broken arm and was treated in the hospital, described the event as a “miracle,” crediting a yellow car for diverting the slabs away from him.
Following the mishap, the transportation of concrete segments for the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) motorway project has been halted as a precaution while investigations are ongoing. Efforts to clear the scene involved towing damaged vehicles and using a crane to remove the large concrete slabs. The investigation into the causes of the accident is still in progress.
