A grieving mother revealed that her daughter purchased 18 wine bottles in the week before her death, expressing concerns about how alcohol delivery apps facilitated her addiction without notice. The mother, Teri, shared that her daughter, Carla, managed to receive large quantities of alcohol at her doorstep despite her severe health condition, which hindered her ability to go out for shopping.
Carla, a mother of one, tragically ordered 18 wine bottles through delivery services in the week leading to her demise. Subsequently diagnosed with cirrhosis, a liver disease caused by prolonged liver damage, Carla passed away at the age of 38.
Now, at 64, Teri is advocating for supermarkets and delivery companies to implement measures preventing vulnerable individuals from placing excessive alcohol orders online. Reflecting on Carla’s situation, Teri disclosed, “By the time I became aware of Carla’s dire circumstances, it was already too late.” She offered support and resources to help Carla, but her efforts were in vain as Carla continued to struggle with her addiction.
Teri, who works as a foster carer, mentioned that Carla’s drinking habits escalated following personal challenges such as a miscarriage, a difficult breakup, and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Teri’s grandson, now 19, alerted her to Carla’s escalating alcohol consumption, prompting Teri to intervene and encourage Carla to seek medical help.
Despite Teri’s efforts, Carla’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her hospitalization in December 2023. Tragically, Carla’s cirrhosis had progressed too far, and she passed away five months after her diagnosis.
Teri, devastated by the loss of her daughter, initiated a petition urging authorities to review alcohol home delivery practices and enforce stricter safeguards to protect vulnerable adults. She emphasized the need for accountability among supermarkets and delivery companies to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Expressing her deep sorrow and regret, Teri lamented the impact of alcohol deliveries and vowed to raise awareness to prevent others from experiencing the same heartbreak. Teri highlighted the loopholes in the current system and stressed the importance of implementing measures to curb excessive alcohol consumption and its devastating consequences.
Teri’s petition seeks to address the challenges posed by easy access to alcohol through online platforms and advocates for greater responsibility among stakeholders to safeguard individuals from the harmful effects of alcohol addiction.
