UK Food Prices See First Annual Increase in a Year

Published on

Food prices have experienced a notable increase for the first time in a year, as per recent research by consumer group Which?. The study monitors over 27,000 prices monthly across major UK supermarkets. The data shows that overall grocery inflation rose from 2.4% in May to 2.6% in June, marking the first uptick since May last year.

Analysis of the data reveals significant price surges in certain products. For instance, Asda’s Just Essentials Mild Cheddar Slices (200g) saw its average price more than double from 65p in the three months to June last year to £1.39 in the same period this year, representing a 113% increase. Sainsbury’s Snack Pork Pies (two x 130g) jumped 92% from 91p to £1.75, while Tesco’s Ms Molly’s Iced Fairy Cakes 12 Pack surged by 66% from £1.20 to £1.99 over the year.

In June, Tesco experienced the highest inflation rate at 4.1%, up from 2.9% in May, followed by Sainsbury’s with a 3.9% price increase. However, loyalty discounts from Tesco’s Clubcard scheme and Sainsbury’s Nectar were not factored into these figures.

Despite current inflation levels being lower than previous peaks, consumers seeking to save on grocery expenses are facing notable challenges. Experts warn that food inflation could rise further in the upcoming weeks due to ongoing repercussions from the Middle East conflict and heightened crude oil prices.

In response to the findings, a Tesco spokesperson emphasized their commitment to offering competitive prices while disputing the data presented by Which?. Sainsbury’s spokesperson highlighted the company’s efforts to provide overall value to customers. An Asda representative underscored the brand’s reputation for offering low prices on a wide range of products.

With many households feeling the pinch of rising prices amidst stagnant wages, the situation raises concerns about real income decline. A recent study by the Work Foundation at Lancaster University revealed that only a minority of firms are planning to provide pay rises above inflation in the coming year.
