MP Ejected for Accusing Starmer of Dishonesty

Published on

Reform UK Member of Parliament Lee Anderson was ejected from the House of Commons for accusing Keir Starmer of dishonesty during a debate. Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle intervened after Anderson implied that the Prime Minister was not truthful regarding his knowledge of Peter Mandelson’s vetting process. The incident occurred as Starmer expressed frustration over Foreign Office officials being kept uninformed about the scandal.

In a heated exchange in the chamber, Anderson challenged Starmer by stating, “The Prime Minister faces a credibility issue. The public, fellow MPs, and even his own supporters doubt his honesty. Does the Prime Minister agree with me that he has not been truthful?” Sir Lindsay interjected, reminding Anderson of parliamentary rules against such accusations and requesting a withdrawal of the statement. Anderson refused and commented, “That man couldn’t tell the truth if he tried.”

In response, Sir Lindsay ordered Anderson to leave the chamber, citing the breach of parliamentary conduct that prohibits accusing colleagues of lying. Subsequently, Your Party MP Zarah Sultana faced a similar outcome after labeling Starmer a liar, leading to her suspension from the House following a vote by MPs.

Meanwhile, during a lengthy debate, the Prime Minister worked to address the fallout from revelations that Lord Mandelson, with ties to Jeffrey Epstein, had not passed security vetting but was still appointed as the UK’s Ambassador to the US. Starmer defended his decision, asserting that had he been aware of the circumstances, he would have revoked Mandelson’s appointment. He criticized the Foreign Office for deliberately withholding crucial information from senior officials, including himself.

The controversy surrounding the scandal escalated with the dismissal of top Foreign Office official Sir Olly Robbins by Starmer, prompting discussions within the Commons. The PM’s statements were made against the backdrop of Sir Olly preparing to testify before MPs, with a close acquaintance describing his emotional state as “heartbroken.”

UN official Tom Fletcher expressed support for Sir Olly, emphasizing his dedication to public service and integrity. Fletcher highlighted the emotional toll the recent events had taken on Sir Olly, noting his resilience amid challenging circumstances.
