“New Order Faces Uncertain Future as Members Take Hiatus”

Published on

New Order, the iconic band from Manchester, is facing an uncertain future as two of its original members have announced their hiatus from live performances due to health issues. The decision implies that only one founding member will be present on stage for upcoming shows.

Drummer Stephen Morris and keyboard player Gillian Morris disclosed their unavailability for live performances this year, leaving only one original band member to carry on. The band expressed regret that Stephen and Gillian couldn’t join them due to personal health reasons but confirmed their upcoming performance at Primavera in Chile.

Formed in 1980 by Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris following the tragic death of Ian Curtis from Joy Division, New Order quickly rose to fame with their unique blend of rock and electronic music. Despite recent lineup changes, the band continues its musical journey with new members Phil Cunningham on keyboards and Tom Chapman on bass.

Speculations about internal issues within the band arose following comments made by former member Peter Hook in an interview. However, sources close to the band dismissed claims of a complete split, affirming that Stephen and Gillian are still integral members of New Order, although absent from live shows.

Peter Hook, now leading his band Peter Hook & The Light, parted ways with New Order in 2007, leading to financial disputes and a subsequent lawsuit in 2015. Despite resolving their financial conflicts in 2017, the band’s unity remains fractured.

New Order is set to be honored at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year, albeit with ongoing tensions among former members. The band’s legacy and impact on the music industry are undeniable, marking a significant chapter in the history of alternative music.
