Prince Louis commemorates his eighth birthday today, and the royal family has followed tradition by unveiling a new portrait of the young prince. The photograph, captured earlier this month during a family excursion to Cornwall, was shared by his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Renowned royal photographer Matt Porteous, known for previous work with the royal family, took the snapshot, which depicts Louis leaning with a smile, arms folded, aboard a boat with the sea as a picturesque backdrop. This portrait differs from previous birthday images of Prince Louis, as it was not taken by the Duchess of Cambridge.
Until his fifth birthday in 2023, the Duchess of Cambridge had been the one behind the lens for Louis’ birthday portraits, featuring alongside him in the photos taken by photographer Millie Pilkington. For his sixth birthday, Kate once again showcased her photography skills, while photographer Josh Shinner took over for his seventh birthday.
In previous years, Prince Louis had charmed royal enthusiasts with his playful demeanor during rare public appearances. However, as he turns eight, a royal expert believes the young prince is beginning to exhibit more restraint in his public behavior as he matures.
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond noted that there might be a touch of wistfulness for Prince William and Duchess Kate as their youngest child grows older. She mentioned, “A tinge of sadness? Yes, it’s inevitable as your ‘baby’ shoots up and grows out of all his clothes, exerts his will and shows his independence, most parents get a touch whimsical about the end of an era: the family is growing up. The baby stage has gone once and for all.”
During a recent Easter Sunday appearance alongside his siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, Jennie observed that Prince Louis exhibited well-behaved conduct, suggesting an increasing awareness of his public image. Jennie remarked, “It was obvious at Easter when we saw the whole family at Windsor that George isn’t the only one who is getting taller. The cheeky little boy in shorts was now a very well behaved young Prince Louis in suit and tie.”
Despite the shift in Louis’ behavior, the royal expert anticipates that he will make more appearances at royal events as he grows older, with Prince William and Duchess Kate maintaining their commitment to safeguarding their children’s privacy. Jennie expressed, “I think Louis will be included in most engagements now that we see the other children, but I’m sure that William and Catherine will continue their policy of giving their young family as normal and private and upbringing as possible in their position. They look like great kids – a credit to their devoted parents.”
