The head of the NHS has criticized the timing of the doctors’ strike, suggesting it was intentionally planned to create chaos. Despite the ongoing strike, NHS England is encouraging patients to seek medical care from hospitals and GPs, emphasizing the importance of not delaying treatment for serious conditions. Hospital operations have managed to proceed as scheduled during past strikes under the leadership of Sir Jim Mackey, but the current six-day walkout coincides with the Easter break, impacting staffing levels.

In a letter to hospital leaders, Sir Jim acknowledged the challenges faced by healthcare workers and expressed gratitude for their dedication in maintaining services during the strike period. A recent YouGov survey revealed that 55% of British adults disapprove of resident doctors participating in strikes, while 37% support their actions.

This latest six-day strike, the 15th since 2023 and among the longest, is part of an ongoing industrial dispute that began under the previous government. The financial cost of each strike day is estimated at around £50 million for staff coverage and rescheduled procedures. Despite the strike, NHS services remain operational, with a focus on prioritizing urgent treatments such as cancer care and critical surgeries.

Resident doctors are protesting against pay reductions and are demanding a return to 2008 salary levels. The British Medical Association (BMA) argues that the proposed pay increase of 3.5% for 2026/27 is insufficient, given the inflation rate. Health Secretary Wes Streeting claims that the offer includes a comprehensive package that would result in an average pay rise of 4.9% for resident doctors, along with other benefits such as exam cost reimbursements and additional training positions.

The BMA’s resident doctors committee rejected the offer, citing concerns about future pay cuts and the phased implementation of the raise. Dr. Jack Fletcher, the committee chair, expressed willingness to reconsider any revised offer but emphasized their stance against further real-terms pay reductions. Comparatively, other healthcare workers, including nurses and midwives, have been offered a 3.3% pay increase, aligning with the pay rises granted to other public sector employees.

Overall, the NHS is striving to ensure patient care remains a top priority during the ongoing strike action, urging individuals to attend appointments as usual unless specifically instructed otherwise.
