A teenager, identified as Nikoline Piwoni Høie, tragically lost her life in a suspected hit-and-run incident while vacationing in the Costa del Sol after celebrating her national team’s victory in the World Cup. The 17-year-old was struck by a vehicle, believed to be a lorry, on the A-7 motorway near La Cala de Mijas, located about 20 miles from Marbella in southern Spain. The driver fled the scene, leaving Nikoline fatally injured.
Prior to the incident, Nikoline had been reported missing after a night out with friends in Puerto Banús. She had been enjoying Norway’s triumph over Brazil in the World Cup with fellow Norwegians. Emergency services were called to the scene around 5:20 am, but unfortunately, Nikoline could not be saved.
Nikoline, who had been holidaying in the Costa del Sol since June 19, was supposed to fly back to Norway on the same day she met with the tragic accident. Spanish authorities are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run, with no arrests made yet. Family spokesperson Finn Greve-Isdahl expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the family, thanking the community for their support during this difficult time.
Nikoline’s stepmother described her anticipation of returning home as unfair and a nightmare. Arendal’s acting mayor, Inger Brokka de Ruiter, labeled the incident deeply tragic and confirmed that the local crisis team is assisting affected relatives and young people. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has been informed, and the embassy stands ready to provide assistance. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
