“Nottingham Families Seek Justice and Systemic Change”

Published on

The mother of a victim of a stabbing incident in Nottingham expressed concerns over the systemic failures that were evident in the handling of the tragic event, drawing comparisons to a previous murder case involving Henry Nowak. Barnaby Webber, a 19-year-old student, and his friend Grace O’Malley-Kumar, also 19, were brutally killed by Valdo Calocane, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, on June 13, 2023, while returning home after a night out at the University of Nottingham.

Calocane went on to murder caretaker Ian Coates, 65, and then used his van to injure three pedestrians, who fortunately survived the attack. Following the conclusion of the inquiry into the incidents, Emma Webber cautioned against exploiting the tragedy to fuel hatred or unrest. She highlighted the similarities between the deaths of her son and Henry Nowak, who had been handcuffed by police officers despite pleading for help after being stabbed.

Regarding the failures in the system, Mrs. Webber emphasized the need to address issues within agencies and systems nationwide to prevent such tragedies from recurring. She stressed the importance of not politicizing or sensationalizing the events for personal gain, urging against inciting further animosity or violence.

Reflecting on the exhaustive inquiry process that involved numerous testimonies, Ms. Webber described it as a challenging and emotional experience, noting ongoing shortcomings despite the passage of nearly three years since the incident. Dr. Sanjoy Kumar, father of Grace O’Malley-Kumar, emphasized the quest for accountability and the necessity of holding individuals responsible for their actions to bring about systemic change.

Looking ahead to the forthcoming closing statements in September, the families expressed a desire for more evidence to be revealed, considering the absence of a trial for the killings. They reiterated their commitment to pursuing justice and ensuring that those accountable are held to task. Darren Coates, son of Ian Coates, along with his brother Lee, acknowledged the difficulty of the process but remained determined to seek justice and push for accountability.

The families are resolute in their pursuit of answers and justice as they prepare for the next phase of the inquiry in September.
