A police officer is set to face court charges for causing death by dangerous driving almost a year after a 16-year-old boy lost his life in an e-bike accident. The officer, Daniel Cartwright, 31, was not on duty when the collision occurred involving two cars and the e-bike on September 28, 2025, at 10:10 am on Chilwell Lane in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire. Tragically, the young cyclist, Ryley Hutson, was fatally injured in the incident.

Following the incident, Mr. Cartwright, a serving police officer from Bedfordshire Police, has now been formally accused of causing death by dangerous driving. He resides in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and is scheduled to appear before Nottingham magistrates on August 6, 2026.

A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe was initiated by Ryley’s aunt shortly after the accident, describing the teenager as vibrant and beloved. She expressed profound grief over Ryley’s untimely passing and highlighted his infectious spirit that touched all who knew him.

Initially, a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the crash but was released on police bail during the investigation process. Detective Inspector Jamie Moore from Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit acknowledged the tragic impact on Ryley’s family and assured ongoing support for them.

An inquest into Ryley’s death was commenced by Coroner Amanda Bewley at Nottingham Coroner’s Court on December 2, revealing preliminary findings from a post-mortem examination attributing chest injuries as the likely cause of death.
