Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, last weekend to enjoy performances by their favorite artists at an unprecedented event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combatting gender-based violence.
Daisy Chain Fields, a charity festival organized by pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, mirrored the groundbreaking Lilith Fair from the 1990s with an all-female lineup. The festival featured a mix of established and emerging stars, including Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, and Garbage.
Before the festival kicked off, Rodrigo revealed that they had raised $10 million for the event’s nonprofit partners, such as Planned Parenthood and the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. This initial sum was later matched by Melinda French Gates, bringing the total fundraising amount to $20 million.
Rodrigo unveiled the festival plans back in June, promising that artists would perform for free, with all proceeds going towards organizations supporting women and girls. The 23-year-old artist paid tribute to past trailblazers by performing with Stevie Nicks and inviting Canadian icons like Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan to join her on stage.
The festival, which coincided with ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the US, attracted attention amid efforts by President Donald Trump to reshape federal family planning programs. Rodrigo emphasized the importance of solidarity and activism in the face of adversity, drawing inspiration from the artists and advocates who participated in Daisy Chain Fields.
In addition to the musical performances, attendees were treated to various art installations and exhibitions, including a tribute to the Riot Grrrl movement. The festival’s positive atmosphere and charitable focus resonated with festivalgoers like Chase Martinez, who described it as a memorable and uplifting experience.
Overall, Daisy Chain Fields was not just a music event but a platform for raising awareness and funds for critical causes, leaving a lasting impact on both the audience and the nonprofit partners involved.
