An investigation is underway following the discovery of over 50 decomposing bodies inappropriately stored at a funeral home in Chicago, as reported by authorities on Thursday.

The Chicago Police Department is leading the investigation at the South Chicago Chapel funeral home situated at 2939 E. 95th St. on the Southeast Side of the city. Initially, officers were called to assist the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in a licensing probe.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, investigators and forensic pathologists who visited the facility found more than 50 deceased individuals in varying stages of decomposition.

Officials are currently evaluating the conditions of the bodies and working to identify them through documents like death certificates, a process that may span several days.

The disturbing find follows complaints from neighbors about a foul odor lingering in the area for nearly two months. Some residents mentioned that the smell was so strong at times that it hindered outdoor activities. One resident, Frank Bower, expressed his concerns about the persistent foul smell in the air.

A statement released by the Chicago police indicated that human remains were discovered at the funeral home, prompting a hazardous material incident response from the Chicago Fire Department. Area 2 Detectives are conducting an inquiry into the matter.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office was informed by state and city officials about improperly stored decedents at the Chicago funeral home. Their team found more than 50 bodies at the location and is currently assessing their condition and searching for identification documents.

Efforts are underway to expedite the identification of the deceased individuals and notify their families as soon as possible. The Medical Examiner’s Office will provide further updates as information becomes available.
