Paula Hudgell, Mother of Double-Amputee Tony, Battles Bowel Cancer

Published on

Paula Hudgell, the adoptive mother of Tony Hudgell, a double-amputee, has successfully undergone a challenging surgery related to her battle with bowel cancer, describing it as the most rigorous experience she has faced. Following a major two-part surgical procedure and hernia repair, the 58-year-old former nurse spent 12 days in the hospital. Paula Hudgell, who received an OBE in 2022 for her advocacy work leading to “Tony’s Law,” which increased penalties for those causing harm to children, was initially diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2022 after repeated misdiagnoses by doctors over a four-year period.

Upon diagnosis, it was discovered that the tumor had penetrated the bowel wall and may have been developing for a decade. Despite being initially cleared of cancer after surgery and chemotherapy, she later learned that the cancer had returned as stage 4, spreading to her lung and peritoneal lining. In a social media update in July of the previous year, she shared the shocking news and expressed her determination to face the battle ahead.

Recently, Paula Hudgell took to Instagram to announce that she had undergone HIPEC and CRS surgery, in addition to a hernia repair. She described the recovery process as challenging but emphasized her determination to persevere, acknowledging the physical and emotional toll it has taken on her.

The emotional post garnered support and encouragement from people worldwide, including messages from public figures like BBC Radio 2 host Zoe Ball and fashion designer Karen Millen. Paula Hudgell also opened up about the impact of her terminal diagnosis on her family, particularly her son Tony, who remains unaware of her condition.

Tony Hudgell, who lost his legs due to severe abuse as an infant, has been a symbol of resilience and strength. Despite the hardships he faced, Tony emerged as a beacon of hope and was recognized with the British Empire Medal for his charitable endeavors. His birth parents, who were convicted of causing his injuries, have been released under specific conditions, sparking discussions about justice and child welfare.
