Kevin Pietersen has sparked a renewed conflict with his former colleague Alastair Cook over Cook’s criticism of England cricketer Jacob Bethell’s decision to stay in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Bethell, who stood out in England’s defeat to Australia in the Ashes, has not seen much action with Royal Challengers Bengaluru after six matches. Cook suggested that Bethell should return to play for Warwickshire in the County Championship instead of remaining idle in the IPL.
Pietersen, who was exiled from the England team in 2014 during Cook’s captaincy, disagreed with Cook’s stance. He emphasized that Cook lacks understanding of the IPL environment and the benefits of being surrounded by top players in the world. Pietersen advised Bethell to stay in India, highlighting that despite not playing, he is learning valuable lessons that will enhance his skills.
Expressing his views further, Pietersen mentioned that if county cricket were as robust as in the late 90s and early 2000s, he would support Bethell’s return. However, Pietersen believes that Bethell’s development in India will be more beneficial for English cricket.
The history between Pietersen and Cook dates back to Pietersen’s exclusion from the Test team, following conflicts with team management. Cook later acknowledged regrets regarding the handling of Pietersen’s removal, crediting Andrew Strauss for the decision. Despite the controversies, Cook reflected on the challenges he faced during that period and the satisfaction of leading England to victory in the 2015 Ashes series.
As for Bethell, he acknowledges his limited IPL appearances last season and the subsequent challenges faced upon returning to England. However, he remains steadfast in his belief that staying in India and experiencing the high standard of cricket in the IPL is crucial for his development.
