A woman suffered severe facial injuries from her pit bull after collapsing during a seizure. Karma Davis, 25, lost both lips, a large part of her left cheek, and the bottom of her nose in the attack. Her left ear was disfigured, and her right ear was partially torn off but later reattached.
Karma, who has a history of grand mal seizures, had forgotten to take her medication that day, likely triggering the episode. During her most recent seizure on March 2, her rescue dog, Fayzo, mauled her while she was unconscious on the kitchen floor.
It was only when Karma FaceTimed her fiancé, Trenton, after regaining consciousness that she realized the extent of her injuries. Trenton, who was at work an hour away, called an ambulance, and Karma was rushed to the hospital for emergency procedures and placed in a medically induced coma for two-and-a-half days.
After multiple surgeries and skin grafts, Karma remains in the hospital for ongoing care, including visits to a plastic surgeon and support from home health nurses. She now requires a feeding tube as she cannot eat normally and may never be able to do so again.
Doctors are exploring options for further reconstructive surgeries, including lip reconstruction or a full lower-face transplant, which would necessitate lifelong anti-rejection medication. Karma’s dog, Fayzo, was removed and euthanized after the attack, which she describes as out of character for him.
Despite her life-changing injuries, Karma maintains a positive outlook, joking about her situation and expressing gratitude for what she can still do. She acknowledges the pain from her injuries, particularly from the skin graft on her thigh, but remains optimistic about her recovery journey.
