Prime Minister Mark Carney maintains regular communication with U.S. President Donald Trump despite ongoing trade tensions and negative comments from U.S. officials. Carney highlighted that recent discussions with Trump have revolved around global affairs, particularly the impact of conflicts in Ukraine and Iran on international energy and grain markets. Speaking at a news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, Carney emphasized the importance of collaborating with the U.S. on global issues. He mentioned recent conversations with Trump regarding Ukraine, Iran, and other international developments.

Following the breakdown of tariff negotiations between Canada and the U.S., escalating trade actions have ensued. The U.S. imposed significant tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada. The Trump administration announced further tariffs and bans on certain Canadian imports. Carney refrained from confirming potential additional counter-tariffs on U.S. products, stating that his government is assessing the recent American measures. Despite the stalled talks, Carney expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial trade deal with the U.S.

Recent disparaging remarks about Canada from Trump and key U.S. officials have strained relations. Notably, Trump renamed Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” and various officials criticized the Canadian Armed Forces. Carney criticized these remarks as being unbecoming of their positions. When asked about Trump’s continued criticism post-negotiations, Carney declined to speculate, emphasizing that the issue is about Canadian sovereignty.
