Police in Co Down, Northern Ireland, have issued an appeal following an incident where two officers were targeted by a vehicle. The officers, part of the Tactical Support Group from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), were conducting a mobile patrol on Killysorrell Road near Blackskull when they encountered a beige/gold Ford Galaxy with faulty number plates.
The incident unfolded as the officers, in an unmarked Skoda, followed the Ford Galaxy to Villa Wood Road. The suspect vehicle abruptly stopped and reversed into the police car. Subsequently, the Ford Galaxy proceeded to Gowdystown Road, where it again reversed at speed into the police vehicle before fleeing southbound on the A1 carriageway.
Following the confrontation, two officers required medical attention, and the police vehicle sustained front-end damage, leading to its temporary removal from service for repairs.
Inspector Rice expressed relief that the officers’ injuries were not severe but condemned the attack on law enforcement personnel. He highlighted the detrimental impact of such incidents on the police’s ability to fulfill their community safety responsibilities.
