“Bridget Phillipson Champions Free Breakfasts Amid Labour Leadership Debate”

Published on

Bridget Phillipson expressed frustration over the distraction caused by discussions around Labour leadership and the Peter Mandelson controversy, stating that they overshadow important policies. The Education Secretary celebrated the milestone of serving 10 million free breakfasts to children in new clubs across England, aiming to alleviate financial burdens and childcare stress for parents.

Despite this achievement, the context remains contentious within the Labour party, with Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham competing to succeed Keir Starmer. Phillipson emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing child poverty through initiatives like ending the two-child limit and extending free school meals to families on Universal Credit.

Speaking to The Mirror, Phillipson highlighted the significance of expanding free school meals and childcare support, emphasizing the positive impact on families. She also expressed disappointment in Streeting’s plan to revive New Labour’s Sure Start centers, favoring the current Best Start Family Hubs approach that reflects modern parenting needs.

Phillipson criticized Reform UK for supporting tax breaks for private schools while opposing free breakfast clubs, noting a misalignment in priorities. The government has pledged to establish free breakfast clubs in all state primary schools by 2029, benefiting over 300,000 children so far.

In addition, Rachel Reeves introduced the Great British Summer Saving scheme, which includes VAT reductions on children’s activities and free bus travel for children aged five to 15 in August. Phillipson will update schools on the breakfast club rollout progress in the coming years as part of the ongoing efforts to support families.
