Postmaster Wins £2M Compensation in Horizon Scandal

Published on

A post office manager recently shared his journey of receiving £2 million in compensation related to the Horizon scandal, following a decade-long battle to clear his reputation. Accused in 2015 of embezzling £89,000 from the Post Office branch he operated with his family, the man faced distressing circumstances due to a computer error in the Horizon system that inaccurately flagged financial discrepancies. Subsequently, he was interrogated by auditors, arrested by the police, suspended from his position, and pressured to repay the alleged stolen funds.

Struggling with the financial burden and looming threat of losing his home, the postmaster, who prefers to stay anonymous, recounted receiving intimidating correspondence and enduring the stigma of being a suspected criminal. It wasn’t until he aligned with Sir Alan Bates’ advocacy movement that he realized the widespread impact of the Horizon scandal on other sub-postmasters.

After enduring over a decade of turmoil, the diligent business owner has finally obtained £2 million in compensation and is now urging accountability for those accountable for the system failure. Reflecting on his ordeal, he emphasized his innocence and the injustice he faced during the investigation, asserting the necessity for ongoing criminal inquiries to hold responsible parties to account.

Operating a post office within his shop in Acton, West London, the man adopted the Horizon software as part of the Post Office’s system upgrade in 2015. However, the system glitches falsely incriminated him for substantial financial theft, leading to a chain of events including audits, accusations, and financial strain.

Despite enduring being labeled a criminal, enduring financial distress, and facing legal actions, he refused a meager compensation offer and engaged forensic accountants to scrutinize his finances. Ultimately, after a protracted legal battle, he secured a substantial settlement of £2 million, a fraction of the true losses suffered by many sub-postmasters.

The compensation victory serves as a testament to the perseverance and evidence-backed pursuit of justice. While acknowledging the challenges faced by other victims, the postmaster encourages them to challenge fixed settlements and pursue fair compensation. Meanwhile, the criminal investigation into the Horizon scandal faces potential delays due to funding constraints, prolonging the quest for accountability and justice for the wronged postmasters.

The Horizon scandal, which wrongfully prosecuted over 900 sub-postmasters due to system errors between 1999 and 2015, has had far-reaching consequences, including financial ruin and health issues for many victims. Acknowledging the pain caused by the scandal, both the Post Office and the Government have expressed regret and emphasized the importance of swift justice and compensation for affected individuals.
