A woman experiencing her first pregnancy faced a health scare when a routine scan revealed concerning results. Dolly Chhabria, 37, and her husband, Kumar Ekansh, also 37, were overjoyed to learn about the pregnancy in August 2023. However, subsequent non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) in the following month detected abnormal DNA, indicating a 50% chance of cancer. A subsequent MRI discovered masses near her heart and collarbone, leading to a cancer diagnosis confirmed by a biopsy on December 1, 2023.
Despite the diagnosis, Dolly had to postpone treatment until after giving birth. She delivered her daughter, Edha, at 37 weeks on March 25, 2024, weighing 2.5kg, and immediately began intensive chemotherapy. Further tests identified Gray Zone Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive B-cell lymphoma, prompting additional treatments like immunotherapy, stem cell transplants, and high-dose chemotherapy. Dolly is currently in remission and undergoes CT scans every three months for monitoring.
Reflecting on her challenging journey, Dolly, a stay-at-home mom from Seattle, Washington, USA, expressed her initial fears and uncertainties during her pregnancy. Despite the unexpected health complications, she remained determined to prioritize her baby’s well-being. Dolly and Kumar, a software engineer, initially debated taking the genetic test but ultimately proceeded due to the advanced maternal age and potential risks associated with the pregnancy.
Following the cancer diagnosis, Dolly underwent bridge therapy to manage the cancer’s growth until after childbirth. Post-delivery, she embarked on intensive chemotherapy, showing positive responses to the treatment. However, a later scan in October 2024 revealed cancer spread to her neck, resulting in the confirmation of Gray Zone Lymphoma. Uncertainty loomed over Dolly’s future, contemplating her ability to witness her child grow up.
Dolly commenced immunotherapy in November 2024, followed by a stem cell transplant and high-dose chemotherapy, leading to remission by April 30, 2025. She opted to defer further treatment unless necessary, focusing on monitoring her health through regular CT scans. Despite the toll on her body from treatments, Dolly remains resilient and determined to regain her health and vitality.
To support her ongoing medical expenses, Dolly has initiated a GoFundMe campaign.
