Nearly half of pub landlords are feeling uncertain about the future viability of their businesses in the coming year, according to recent research. Despite a boost in revenue during the World Cup, many publicans are struggling to stay afloat due to rising costs such as wages and energy expenses.

The changing habits of consumers, along with the increasing cost of living, have also contributed to a decline in patronage at local pubs. A survey conducted by Greenpeace and Survation revealed that 47% of landlords lack confidence in the future of their establishments, with an additional 19% expressing uncertainty.

Of those who expressed doubts, a significant portion believed that their pubs could only continue operating under current conditions for less than a year. To cope with financial challenges, nearly half of severely impacted landlords resorted to using personal savings, while others turned to personal credit cards, loans, or property remortgaging.

In response to escalating costs, many pubs have taken proactive measures, including price increases, staff reductions, adjustments in energy usage, and cuts in owner or manager compensation. Greenpeace is urging the government to provide support to pubs facing exorbitant energy bills, especially in light of concerns over potential further increases due to geopolitical conflicts.

Efforts to mitigate energy expenses, such as installing solar panels and batteries, have been undertaken by some pub owners. However, the financial strain remains significant, leading to fears of closure for many establishments. Calls are being made for the government to expand its renewable energy funding scheme to include pubs and other community hubs in order to alleviate financial pressures and ensure their continued operation.
