A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history by becoming the first individual in North America to undergo a liver transplant using a regenerated liver. This groundbreaking technology has the potential to significantly increase the number of available livers for transplant, with an estimated 20 to 24 additional livers potentially becoming available in the first year of implementation.
Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec, had been battling liver issues for about 15 years, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prior to his transplant surgery at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), Landry received the surprising news that his new liver had been regenerated using a novel machine developed by his doctor over several years.
The innovative technology, known as Liver Assist, enables doctors to assess and treat donated livers outside the body before transplantation, making it possible to utilize organs that may have previously been considered too risky. Dr. David Hénault, the hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon and liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s surgery, which demonstrated promising results almost immediately.
The Liver Assist system functions by connecting the donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation during the organ’s preservation. This process helps simulate the conditions within the human body, ensuring that the liver functions properly before transplantation.
The team at CHUM anticipates that the new technology could significantly boost the number of available livers for transplantation, potentially benefiting many patients awaiting life-saving procedures. Furthermore, studies have shown that Liver Assist can reduce complications, hospital stays, and the need for reoperations among suitable candidates.
As Landry continues his recovery in Montreal, he expresses eagerness to return home to Gaspésie and reunite with his family, friends, and horses. He hopes that his experience will raise awareness about organ donation, emphasizing the importance of having donated organs available to maximize the potential of advanced medical technologies in saving lives.
