A rare weather phenomenon is expected to affect parts of the UK starting tonight, according to meteorologists.

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for ice. One warning covers regions in southern England and Wales from 10pm to 9am on Monday. The other warning applies to Northern Ireland from 7pm to 9am. Both alerts also highlight the potential risk of “freezing fog.”

The advisory cautions that with recent rainfall and temperatures dropping to or below freezing, icy patches could develop on untreated surfaces from Sunday night into Monday morning. The formation of ice may depend on the extent of cloud cover, particularly in Wales and central southern England, where temperatures may reach levels conducive to ice formation. Additionally, fog patches could pose further dangers.

Freezing fog occurs when small water droplets freeze instantly upon contact with surfaces at freezing temperatures, as explained by the US National Weather Service. Surfaces like trees, stairs, rails, pavements, roads, and cars may be affected, necessitating extra caution for travelers. Freezing fog can lead to the formation of black ice.

The Met Office has cautioned about potential injuries from slips on icy surfaces within the warned regions. Icy patches are anticipated on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths.

For safety, the Met Office recommends planning journeys ahead of time. Leaving home at least five minutes earlier can reduce the risk of accidents and falls. If walking, choose main roads as they are less likely to be slippery. When cycling, stick to main roads that are more likely to have been treated.
