“Reform Candidate Accused of Homophobia Ahead of By-election”

Published on

Reform’s candidate in the by-election is being accused of displaying homophobia due to comments made on an associated account referring to gay men as “poofs” and criticizing their presence on television. Robert Kenyon, who is contesting against Labour’s Andy Burnham in Makerfield, allegedly posted these remarks on a now-defunct rugby league forum called RLFans.

Kenyon, who was previously in the spotlight for alleged misogyny, is connected to an account on the forum under the username ‘post’. Entries on this account mentioned Kenyon’s former handle @robkenyon1 and promoted his book, “Blood Waltz.”

In a post from 2009 provided to The Mirror, the account stated, “You can’t call her ‘The Queen’ anymore because it offends the poofs.” Another post in the following year criticized the representation of homosexuals in the media, mentioning specific personalities like Julian Clarey, Graham Norton, and Paul O’Grady.

Regarding a ‘Pride Day’ announcement by Wigan Warriors in 2020, a post from the account expressed opposition, stating that children at a rugby club should not be exposed to such celebrations. Another post in the same year suggested that the LGBT community should seek acceptance without drawing excessive attention.

Labour chair Anna Turley condemned Kenyon’s statements, urging Nigel Farage to clarify why someone with homophobic views should represent Makerfield. In response, a Reform UK spokesperson dismissed the concerns, emphasizing that the comments were made almost two decades ago.

Kenyon faced further backlash for alleged remarks on the same forum about abortion and Brexit. He was reported to have made controversial comments about women’s decisions on abortions and confirmed his support for Brexit in the referendum.

Despite the controversies, Kenyon’s party stood by him, highlighting his Brexit stance and accusing Andy Burnham of potentially reversing Brexit progress. The party defended Kenyon’s past comments, claiming they do not reflect his current political position.
