“Reform UK Candidate Warns of Nursery Abuse Risk with Free Childcare”

Published on

A candidate from Reform UK contesting in the upcoming Senedd election in Wales has expressed concerns that increasing free childcare hours for parents could lead to a rise in nursery abuse incidents. Martin Roberts, a candidate in the Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr constituency, suggested that mothers might regret not caring for their babies themselves, emphasizing traditional gender roles where women nurture and men provide.

This statement by Roberts follows pledges from several major parties to expand childcare services in Wales ahead of the May 7 election. Reform UK, however, has not outlined a specific childcare policy if they secure seats in the Senedd.

Although Reform has not directly addressed Roberts’ remarks, the party criticized Plaid Cymru, claiming the party lacks credibility based on previous social media posts by some of its candidates.

The controversy escalated when another Reform candidate, Mark Lawrence, reportedly expressed a preference for supporting women to stay at home rather than investing in childcare during a recent hustings event. Plaid Cymru candidate Heledd Fychan condemned Lawrence’s views, suggesting they belonged to a bygone era.

Roberts’ comments were made in response to Fychan’s account of the hustings event, where she alleged Lawrence’s stance on childcare. Roberts emphasized concerns about potential increases in nursery abuse if the proposed policy on childcare hours were implemented, advocating for parental care until children are of preschool age.

Challenged about his insinuation regarding nursery workers, Roberts highlighted the potential risks of hiring additional staff if the proposed policy were to be enacted. He stressed the importance of parental involvement in childcare decisions, pointing out the inherent nurturing roles of women and the traditional provider roles of men.

A Reform spokesperson, when asked about Roberts’ comments, criticized Plaid Cymru, citing instances of misconduct within the party as evidence of their lack of moral standing.

In the ongoing discourse, contrasting views on childcare policies and gender roles continue to be at the forefront of the political debate ahead of the Senedd election.
