David Hockney, a renowned British artist, has passed away at the age of 88 as confirmed by his publicist. The news of his death was shared today, marking the end of a seven-decade-long career during which he established himself as one of Britain’s most successful artists. The statement from his publicist revealed that Hockney peacefully passed away at his residence yesterday, just one month before he would have turned 89.

Earlier this year, Hockney, who had been struggling with his health, celebrated a new exhibition in Paris. The showcase featured over 450 pieces, including some of his iconic earlier works. In an interview during the event, he expressed his satisfaction, mentioning his age and his initial doubts about being able to participate due to his age and smoking habit.

Born in 1937 as one of five siblings, Hockney’s artistic journey began when he sold his first painting for £10 in 1957 after leaving school. Despite facing challenges at art school, he continued to hone his skills and pursue his passion for drawing.

Reflecting on his success, Hockney shared that his younger self from Yorkshire would have found it unbelievable, emphasizing his dedication to his craft over monetary gains. Throughout his life, he remained focused on his art, viewing it as his wealth and source of fulfillment.

Hockney, known for his candidness about his health, once stated that as long as he could paint, he would be content. In a 2023 interview with Sky Arts, he emphasized the importance of the hand, eye, and heart in creating art, regardless of physical limitations.

His great nephew Richard, who had been a frequent subject for Hockney’s portraits, expressed how the artist’s work kept him going, indicating that as long as Hockney could paint, he would remain vibrant and alive through his artistry.
