Rochelle Humes recently shared that she earned more during her time in S Club Juniors than in The Saturdays, despite the latter’s chart-topping success with hits like ‘All Fired Up’ and ‘Higher’. Reflecting on the changing landscape of the music industry by 2008, Rochelle noted a significant decline in financial opportunities.
In a conversation with Jamie Laing on his Great Company podcast, Rochelle disclosed, “I made more money in S Club Juniors than I did in The Saturdays. The music industry… the money just went out of it. It wasn’t the same space to be in anymore.”
Rochelle’s journey began in the early 2000s when she joined S Club Juniors at the age of 12, alongside other talented members. The group achieved success with popular tracks like Automatic High during their collaboration from 2001 to 2003.
Further detailing her experience with The Saturdays, Rochelle explained that while she received a fixed salary, her main earnings came from endorsement deals and touring rather than music sales. The shift in industry dynamics led to record labels adopting 360 deals, impacting artists’ income from brand partnerships and live performances.
Moreover, Rochelle candidly discussed the challenges of dealing with intrusive paparazzi during her time in the spotlight, highlighting the invasive tactics employed by photographers. She emphasized the disparities in experiences between herself, as a member of a girl band, and her husband Marvin, who was part of a boy band, underscoring the unsettling aspects of fame they navigated.
