The Royal British Legion is honoring individuals who served during the Iraq War today, marking 15 years since the conflict ended.
A national commemorative event is set to remember the 179 Armed Forces personnel who sacrificed their lives in Operation TELIC, over 6,000 who were wounded, as well as their families and loved ones.
Approximately 1,500 members of the Armed Forces community are anticipated to participate in the service titled “Remembering Iraq: 15 Years On” at the National Memorial Arboretum. The event will include laying of wreaths, readings, a Service of Remembrance, and a Chinook helicopter flypast.
The event will be graced by the presence of the Rt Hon John Healey MP, Secretary of State for Defence, and hosted by former ITV News war correspondent Bill Neely. Performances by mezzo-soprano Laura Wright and US singer Will Brown are also scheduled.
WO1 Johnson Beharry VC, honored for exceptional bravery during the Iraq conflict in 2004, will be present at the event. He valiantly rescued fellow soldiers under intense enemy fire, despite sustaining severe injuries himself.
Expressing his sentiments prior to the service, Beharry emphasized the significance of remembering the comrades lost in Iraq and the enduring impact of the conflict on veterans and families.
Anna-Marie McDonald, whose father Private Joseva Lewaicei lost his life in Iraq, will be in attendance. Lewaicei was the first Fijian to join the Royal Anglian Regiment and was killed in action during a routine patrol.
Dr. Ziaur Rahman, a former Westminster Dragoon reservist with the Royal Yeomanry, shared his struggles with PTSD and physical ailments following his service in Iraq. The Royal British Legion provided crucial support, enabling him to resume his career.
Mark Atkinson, Director General at the Royal British Legion, stressed the importance of recognizing the service and sacrifices of those who served in Iraq, acknowledging the enduring impact on veterans and families.
The event at the National Memorial Arboretum aims to honor the legacy of the Iraq War and provide ongoing support to the Iraq generation and their families.
