The royal family is grappling with a challenging issue as fake AI-generated photos of its members inundate social media platforms, an expert warns.
Advancements in technology have made it effortless to create fabricated images of prominent figures like the Prince and Princess of Wales, their offspring, and others. These counterfeit visuals often circulate on social media, deceiving some followers by appearing authentic.
Moreover, a recent online trend showcases AI-generated images and videos depicting the royals endorsing businesses or engaging in unconventional scenarios. Royal specialist Jennie Bond notes that as AI technology progresses, it poses a growing dilemma for the monarchy.
Former BBC royal correspondent, Jennie Bond, emphasized, “It is indeed a significant problem – and finding a solution seems nearly unattainable. The royal family recognizes the importance of their image, a concept they once disregarded but now acknowledge as crucial in this era of heightened public relations awareness.”
Expressing concern over AI misuse are Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who joined other celebrities in urging a ban on the development of ‘superintelligent’ AI. In a letter directed to tech giants like Google and Meta, Prince Harry emphasized the need for AI to benefit humanity rather than supplant it.
In a separate incident back in 2024, social media was rife with outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding the Princess of Wales following her abdominal surgery. Despite initial clarifications from Kensington Palace, false information continued to circulate until the Princess disclosed her cancer diagnosis and upcoming chemotherapy treatment.
Jennie also criticized the invasion of privacy caused by the dissemination of seemingly authentic images, particularly targeting royals who are subjected to widespread sharing on social media platforms. She stressed the necessity for stricter legal measures to safeguard individuals’ images and cautioned against blindly believing content on social media channels.
