Rugby league icon, John Kear, passed away at the age of 71. The renowned former coach of England, Sheffield, Hull, Wakefield, Batley, Bradford, and Widnes, had participated in the BBC’s Challenge Cup final commentary on Saturday but tragically died the following day.

Kear had a successful 10-year playing career as a threequarter at Castleford before transitioning to coaching with Bramley in 1992. His coaching journey continued with French team PSG before moving to Sheffield Eagles, where he achieved a notable victory by defeating Wigan at Wembley to secure the Challenge Cup in 1998.

His coaching accomplishments extended to Hull FC, where he replicated the feat in 2005. Subsequently, he managed Wakefield, followed by coaching roles at Batley, Bradford, and Widnes. Kear also led the England team at the Rugby League World Cup in 2000, guiding them to the semi-finals.

In a statement, the RFL expressed condolences for Kear’s sudden passing and highlighted his significant contributions to the sport. Kear’s coaching legacy included steering Wakefield Trinity to safety during his tenure and coaching various national teams, including France, England, and Wales.

Despite his extensive coaching career spanning over 700 matches, Kear never coached his beloved Castleford Tigers, where he had previously played. He was recognized for his on-field achievements, including a memorable try against Hull KR in 1984. Kear also played a pivotal role as an assistant coach when Castleford secured the Challenge Cup in 1986.

Kear’s presence as a commentator and broadcaster for the BBC, particularly during Challenge Cup events, was well-known. Tributes poured in from his former clubs, with Wakefield Trinity and Hull FC expressing deep sadness at his passing and extending condolences to his family and friends. Hull FC remembered Kear for leading them to victory in the 2005 Challenge Cup Final and acknowledged his enduring impact on the sport.
