Lt Gen Vladimir Alekseyev, a high-ranking military official under Vladimir Putin, was targeted in an apparent assassination bid in Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry deputy head of military intelligence was shot multiple times by an unidentified attacker, according to Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko. Alekseyev is currently receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds, with the incident occurring near his residence. There have been previous instances of Russian military figures being assassinated, with Ukraine often being blamed.
This incident follows talks facilitated by the US between Ukrainian and Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi. Although both sides acknowledged the talks as productive, significant disagreements persist regarding various issues, including the future of Ukraine’s Donbas region and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, along with Western security assurances post-conflict.
In a recent development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a substantial and “intentional” assault by Moscow on Kyiv, coinciding with extreme cold weather conditions. Zelensky revealed that a considerable number of ballistic missiles and drones targeted critical energy infrastructure, causing severe damage.
