“Scottish Women Blame Depo-Provera for Brain Tumors”

Published on

A woman, Nicola McKay, from the Scottish Highlands, blames the contraceptive injection she took for years for causing three severe brain tumors that have significantly impacted her life. She, along with many other women, suspect that the long-term use of Depo-Provera injections led to the discovery of these tumors. Nicola expressed her initial belief in the drug’s safety but now attributes her health challenges to the brain tumors detected by doctors last year.

Nicola, a nurse, shared with BBC Scotland News that she opted for the Pfizer-manufactured injection for its convenience, only to face the devastating consequences of brain tumors. The tumors, which doctors partially treated with radiotherapy, continue to affect her daily life, leading to seizures and ongoing medical treatment.

Among the affected women is Trish Saunders, who, at 45, underwent brain surgery after being diagnosed with a meningioma tumor linked to her use of Depo-Provera as a teenager. Studies, including one published in the British Medical Journal, have revealed an increased risk of developing such tumors from long-term use of the contraceptive injection, which can result in severe headaches, hearing loss, and seizures.

The law firm Thompsons Solicitors Scotland is investigating these cases, with over 200 women in Scotland reporting similar issues, and 150 pursuing legal action. The affected women recently spoke to Scottish Parliament members about their experiences. Pfizer and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency (MHRA) reiterated that they are monitoring the drug’s safety and will take further regulatory action if necessary.

The MHRA’s chief safety officer, Dr. Alison Cave, emphasized the agency’s commitment to ongoing safety reviews of medroxyprogesterone acetate and related progestins. Pfizer reaffirmed its dedication to patient safety, highlighting the drug’s long history of global use and encouraging individuals to consult healthcare professionals if they have concerns or experience side effects.
