Second Six-Foot Snake Found on UK Golf Course

Published on

A six-foot snake was discovered for the second time on a golf course in the UK, raising concerns that an exotic pet owner might be abandoning their reptiles with more potentially hidden in the area. The dangerous reptile was found in tall grass near the fifth hole at Blackwell Grange Golf Club in Darlington, County Durham, on a Friday morning. This incident occurred just a week after a similar six-foot boa constrictor was found approximately 20 yards away in the same vicinity.

In contrast to the first snake, which staff managed to coax into a cardboard box safely, the latest reptile displayed aggression by swiping at the staff attempting to capture it. PGA professional Aaron Cox, originally from Brisbane, Australia, was surprised by the news of the second snake sighting while teaching a junior golf session. Reflecting on his experiences with snakes, he mentioned the need for warning signs at golf clubs in Australia, never anticipating a similar situation in County Durham.

Describing the recent encounter, Aaron noted the snake appeared larger and thicker than the previous one, estimating its length to be at least six feet. Despite the aggressive behavior of the snake, Aaron successfully contained it, mentioning the challenges in handling it compared to the first encounter.

The discovery of the second snake followed the incident where a 12-year-old golfer found the first snake while retrieving her ball during a junior session on June 13. With the joint efforts of Aaron and head professional Peter Raine, the first snake was contained and handed over to a specialist pet shop, where its safety was confirmed. Boa constrictors, like the ones found, are non-venomous and prey on animals by constricting them before consuming them whole.

These reptiles are not native to the UK and are typically found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, making their presence at the golf club’s boundary a puzzle for officials. Speculation about the origin of these snakes includes the possibility of them being dumped near a nearby lane with homes and a pond. Concerns about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership were raised, emphasizing the need to address such incidents promptly.

Despite the unusual discoveries, golf activities continued on the course, with members expressing cautiousness around the area where the snakes were found. However, if more snakes are discovered in the same vicinity, further actions, such as involving the council for a search, may be considered to address the situation effectively.
