“Shortage of Dentists Shaping Makerfield By-Election”

Published on

A shortage of dentists is likely to play a significant role in determining the outcome of the Makerfield by-election, according to recent polling results involving Andy Burnham. The British Dental Association’s investigation revealed that no dental clinics in the area are currently accepting new adult NHS patients.

Research conducted by Survation for the advocacy group 38 Degrees has exposed the pressing issue of dental care accessibility in Makerfield, a crucial theme in recent British political history. In a telephone survey of 500 constituents, 63% expressed concerns about the availability of affordable NHS dental services, while only 32% reported no worries.

Furthermore, the BDA’s outreach to all listed dental practices accepting new NHS patients disclosed lengthy waiting lists of up to two-and-a-half years, rendering none available for immediate registration. The BDA highlighted Hindley Prison as the sole location within the constituency offering NHS dental care for adults.

Eddie Crouch, Chair of the BDA, emphasized the urgency of translating governmental promises into tangible actions and adequate funding to address the prevailing dental care challenges. The forthcoming parliamentary debate on the ‘Dentists for All’ campaign, initiated in response to a Mirror petition garnering over 250,000 signatures, underscores the growing public demand for improved NHS dental services.

The petition advocates for reinstating funding for dental care services and increasing the number of NHS dentists to address the alarming statistics of unmet dental care needs in England. The current dental contracts system, criticized by the Health Select Committee as outdated and counterproductive, should be revised to prioritize patient care needs over procedural quotas.

In Makerfield, Labour’s Andy Burnham is vying against Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon, with the dental care crisis taking center stage. Both political parties have been urged to address the electorate’s concerns regarding NHS dental accessibility, reflecting the broader national debate on the future of dental healthcare provision in the UK.
